A student’s worst moment should never be allowed to become their permanent identity.
The ISS Restorative Manual: Ways to Be Proactive in a Reactive Environment challenges educators, school leaders, behavior specialists, and everyone who works with young people to look beyond the behavior and recognize the opportunity standing in front of them.
ISS is not a place to simply punish a student for what they did. It presents ISS as an opportunity to help the student understand what happened, why it happened, which part belonged to them, and what they will do differently when they get another opportunity.
Because eventually, another opportunity will come.
The question is: Will we prepare the student to handle it differently when it does?
